Mini-Release #001: "In Memoriam"
"In Memoriam" marks the inaugural release from Rivercore, a label dedicated to ambient and experimental music and beyond. This series will release a new track every few weeks, providing a space for spontaneous creativity, archived materials, and compositions that are ready to be shared but not part of a bigger release.
The inspiration for "In Memoriam" stems from a field recording walk undertaken by Magda Drozd during her research trip to Johannesburg in August 2023, alongside the collective "Playground" (comprising Jill Richards, BJ Engelbrecht, and Jurgen Meekel). Shortly after that, the artist crafted an initial version of the track in her temporary studio in Johannesburg. Drawing inspiration from the rich sounds encountered through her engagement with various materials on-site, Drozd composed this ambient piece a year later, inviting listeners to explore contrasting states of mind. The piece evokes the myriad particles, fragments, and materials, that we encounter on our journey.
With a diverse array of instruments, the chamber music-inspired track seamlessly transitions from poignant violin melodies to evolving textures and melancholic phrases. The music oscillates between moments of serenity and tension, encouraging the listener to explore their memories and experiences while navigating this sonic journey. Ultimately, it becomes a meditation on existence, loss, and the melancholia found in fleeting encounters.
